Une maison de favela, je ne peux pas dire que c’est une oeuvre architecturale. Mais ce que les gens ont pu faire de mieux pour vivre; c’est un toit.
A casa da favela, não vou dizer que seja uma obra de arquitetura. Mas é o que a pessoa pode fazer pra viver, é um teto que a pessoa tem.

It is easy to get emotionally caught up in the romantic 'beauty' of the favela Carioca. What would Rio be like without favelas? Without the visual tension between 'have' and 'have not'? This is what makes Rio de Janeiro one of the most fascinating cities in the world. But I must be careful not to sensasionalise the complete lack of 'choice' of the favelado. The favela is a disgrace to humankind and symbolic of utter disrespect and the maintenance of a sub-culture.
